Did you know that one-third of babies sweat at night? You might be wondering why your little toddler wets his pyjamas even without peeing in the night. It can be a case of night sweating. Read on to know more about why kids are more prone to sweat in the night.

What Are Night Sweats?

Episodes of sweating in the night refer to night sweats. The act of sweating can either affect the sleep of your toddler or simply doesn’t bother him. It cannot be night sweats if the sweating is due to a warm temperature in the room. All other forms of sweating in the night take the name (1).

Causes Of Toddler Sweating At Night:

Your question must be why does my toddler sweat at night? Children are more likely to develop night sweating due to some specific reasons. These can be some of them.

  • Children spend more time in deep sleep.
  • The temperature regulation system of your toddler will not be as mature as that of adults.
  • The sweat glands in children’s body are more in number than us.
  • Fever, cold or sinus infection can also cause night sweats.
  • Nightmares can lead to a disturbed sleep and subsequently result in night sweating.
  • Medical conditions like sleep apnea can instigate sweating in the night.
  • A side effect of some medications can also trigger night sweats.

Even without any medical cause,toddler sweats at night can happen. It is primarily because of a condition called primary focal hyperhidrosis. This type of sweating occurs only in some specific areas of the body like hands, feet, underarm, head or face (2).

The common reason for the night sweats can be simply because the child is feeling overheated. Children may or may not be comfortable when they sweat at night. Toddler sweating at night can happen because of too much heat. An overheated child will not be able to sleep comfortably through the night and will wake up frequently in damp clothes and blankets.

However, children who night sweat due to some other reasons will be fully comfortable in their deep sleep and will hardly know for herself that she is sweating. If the child sweats due to a medical condition, it should be the body’s reaction to fight off the infection at night.

A toddler who suffers from sleep apnea will sweat due to the hard efforts to breathe properly. Sleep apnea is a condition in which during sleep one pauses in breathing. Instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep is also called sleep apnea.

Phenol intolerance in food can also cause night sweats in children. Most fruits have some level of phenol in them (3).

When To Seek Medical Assistance?

You can afford to neglect normal night sweating in children. However, if the night sweats accompany some other indicators like the one listed below, take her to your pediatrician.

  • Night sweats regularly occur
  • Fever
  • Snoring
  • Infrequent breathing or breathing with added effort
  • Shows signs of body pain
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive tiredness during the day
  • Any other symptoms of sickness


If night sweating persists for long, take your child to the doctor. Discuss the sleep habits of your toddler and his medical history. If he founds everything else sound, he will check for any underlying medical cause which triggered the sweating (4).

If there is any illness that contributes to the night sweats, the doctor will first try to cure the disorder. However, if there is no reported medical reason, then the next step will be to find any factors which are disturbing the sound sleep of your child. Be it any padded clothing, thick blankets or simply the high temperature of your kid’s bedroom, steps will be taken to alleviate the disturbing factors.

Even if your baby sweats at night, you don’t need to worry about any health issue in her if she eats sufficiently and grows properly. An ill child will show retarded growth rate. Does your baby sweat in the night?
