Pregnancy is undoubtedly a time of joy. But it is also a time of extreme curiosity and anxiousness.
While you are pregnant, there must be several questions running through your mind regarding – The delivery of your baby. Among which one question you may have is the position of your baby during birth.
Position Of Baby During Birth:
Which baby position before birth is considered easy? It is easier to give birth to your baby, when the baby is in a particular position in the pelvis zone before birth. Ideally, it is when your baby’s head is pointing downwards.
However, there are various positions in which your baby can lie in your pelvis before birth, and this can make your delivery easier or difficult. Understanding about the different ways your baby positions in the womb will help ease your queries. This will also give you a better approach on what is the right position of baby during delivery.

Different Positions Of Baby During Birth:
There are different types of positions which your baby can occupy before birth. These will end up deciding your method of delivery, whether normal or C-section.
Here are the most common baby positions during labor:
1. Anterior Position – The Best Baby Position:
The best position for easier delivery is when your baby’s head is facing down and the back of head is little towards the front of your tummy. This position is known as the ‘Occiput Anterior Position’, which makes the labor short and easy for you.
- In this position, your baby is lying snugly into your pelvis, which is a bowl shaped structure of bone, in the lower abdomen. Hip bones form the pelvis and hold all the reproductive organs, kidneys and the bowel.
- When the baby is lying to your right, it would be written as ROA (Right Occiput Anterior) and if lying to your left, it would be written as LOA (Left Occiput Anterior).
- This position can be broadly understood as the position in which baby can flex his neck, head and tuck his chin into the chest.
- The narrowest part of the head presses your cervix, which helps during delivery. When the baby enters into the pelvis during birth, this anterior position of the baby makes it easy for the baby to come down gently.
- In majority of cases, babies lie in this position.
2. Occiput Posterior Position:
Your baby can be positioned with his back against your back. This is called OP or ‘Occiput Posterior’ position. This position is referred to as back-to-back baby position.
- If your baby is lying in your pelvis in this position, labor can take longer. This is because your baby can’t fit snugly into your pelvis and also fails to tuck his chin into his chest which makes the position a little awkward.
- Thus, this position also causes back pain during labor.
There are a few reasons for a baby being in OP position:
a. Shape And Type Of Pelvis:
One reason can be the shape of pelvis which is normally round in shape.
- Some women have a heart shaped, oval and a narrow pelvis.
- This shape of pelvis causes the baby to settle in OP position in the widest space of your pelvis as it gets more area to rest the head easily.

If you are upright most of the time and do a lot of manual work in your life, you would not have to face the OP position of your baby.
- In instances like sitting in the car, working on a computer in the office and curling up in the armchair while watching television, your pelvis is tipped backwards.
- This baby position is very likely to happen when you are in a position where your knees are always elevated above the pelvis level.
- The heaviest part of your baby, that is, the back of the baby’s head, will swing to the back when your pelvis is tipped backwards. This leads to posterior baby position during birth.
- It is very important to do some physical activities regularly and avoid sitting in one place for long to avoid this position.
You can bring your baby back into the anterior position from the posterior position by ‘Optimal Foetal Positioning’ (OFP) process. You can, by yourself, encourage your baby to get into anterior position by lowering your knees always below the level of pelvis. Of course this has to be green-signaled by your doctor first.
