While getting that much-needed sleep for your baby is important, at the same time, it is crucial to focus on the sleeping positions for babies.

Why Babies Sleeping Position Matters?

It is always recommended that babies should be put to sleep lying on their backs, so as to minimize the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Babies change their sleeping position over time, but it is important to take care about their sleeping position in the initial months after their birth.

6 Newborn Baby Sleeping Positions Commonly Seen:

Below are some of the positions that your baby will sleep in, also explaining a side to his or her personality:

1. Fetal Position:

This is the most common sleep position in the babies. This position shows your baby’s sensitive nature.

2. Log Position:

In this position, your baby lies on one side with both the arms down the side.

3. Yearner:

This is also one of the common and relaxed sleep positions seen in babies. In this position, your baby sleeps on one side with the arms in front.

4. Soldier:

In this position, your baby lies on the back with the arms on the side. Your baby’s sleeping in this position looks reserved and shy, as if they keep things to themselves.

5. Free Fall:

This is the most adventurous sleeping position for your baby. In this position, your baby lies on the front with the arms around the pillow and the face is positioned to one side. Babies sleeping in this position are said to be more free and adventurous.

6. Starfish:

This is also one of the common sleep positions seen among babies. In this position, your baby lies on his back with arms raised up towards the sky, like a starfish.

Best Sleeping Position For Baby – Sleeping On The Back:

Putting your infant asleep on his/her back is the best position by all means.

  • According to a recent study in the United States, sleeping on the back reduces the high risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) that is usually caused due to suffocation.
  • Putting your infant to sleep on his stomach is considered to be risky and dangerous, as there is every possibility that oxygen supply will be cut off to the infant’s fragile lungs.
  • Sometimes, sleeping on the stomach reduces oxygen supply, making your infant re-breathe the carbon dioxide.

The recent studies also indicate that putting your infant to sleep on the side is not recommended, as it has its own disadvantages. Unless there is another pediatric condition wherein your baby’s doctor suggests that the side position should be used, there is no reason that this position should be opted for.

Keeping Baby Safe While Sleeping:

Below are some of the ways you can ensure your baby is safe while sleeping:

  • The back sleep position is the safest of all positions for your baby.
  • Place your baby on a plain soft surface for a comfortable sleep.
  • Do not allow smoking near your baby.
  • Keep your baby’s sleeping area close to you, not too far away.
  • Use a clean and dry pacifier while making your baby sleep.
  • Do not let your baby get sweaty or heated up due to weather while asleep.

The initial months of your baby are very important.

  • You should always place your babies on their stomach when they are awake and ensure someone is watching them. This helps your baby’s neck and shoulder to be stronger.
  • Once your baby starts to roll over and move around, he or she will start adopting the sleep position that is most comfortable. Although you should still place them on the back when you are putting baby down for a nap, you should not move your baby if he or she rolls over during the night.
  • Make sure that the surroundings are free from objects such as toys, pillows, etc., to avoid suffocation of your baby.
  • Your newborn should sleep on the back for at least the first year. This is one of the best ways to keep your baby away from any chance of SIDS.
  • Maintain a clean environment around your baby so as to keep away any infections.
