Having a child is a very special experience for every woman. You may have envisioned having a normal, or natural, delivery. But sometimes health conditions do not allow a normal delivery and you may have to go for a caesarean section, also called a C-section.

In some cases, the C-section can be pre planned, since you may want to avoid the pain, or have your baby on a specific date.

Whatever the reason for C-section, it takes a toll on your body, and conceiving again is something you have to plan for.

What Is A C-Section?

A caesarean section is an operation performed to get your baby out by cutting open your tummy, as opposed to normal vaginal delivery.

  • For a C-section, your surgeon will make a cut into your tummy and uterus. This cut is just along the line of your pubic hair and is often referred to as the bikini cut.
  • A C-section operation is like other surgeries. It involves bleeding, post-operative pain and stitches. Adequate care is required for recovery.
  • Some women have been reported to have fever for a few days in pregnancy after a c section.

Time Gap Between Pregnancies:

The recommended time gap for pregnancy after C-section is between 12 to 36 months. This seems to be a long range, but there are reasons for it:

  • Every woman has her own healing system. The time you take for recovery depends on how soon your body can heal the wounds.
  • In case you have had complications in your earlier pregnancy, then a long gap may be advised.
  • If the C-section was done as an emergency measure, then you will need more time to get back to normal.

The general verdict is that there should be a gap of at least one year between a C-section and your next pregnancy.

Why Time Gap Is Required For Pregnancy After C Section?

There are couples who want to have another child soon, and you may want to get pregnant a few months after having a C-section operation. However, appropriate time must be given because of the following reasons:

  • Your body has gone through a lot during one pregnancy, so it needs all the strength to support another one.
  • Caesarean section is a major abdominal surgery. Having another child soon may prevent complete recovery and healing.
  • You may have bouts of depression, or suffer extreme weakness after a C-section. if you are quickly getting pregnant after a c-section, it will be hazardous.
  • The chances for natural pregnancy are often low immediately after a C-section. You may need to get fertility medicines in order to conceive.

Normal Delivery After C-Section:

It is possible to have a normal delivery, popularly known as VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section), after you have had a C-section. But there are risks involved in this. You may need to have an emergency operation, if you are found to have any of this risk of pregnancy after c-section. Doctors often advise against having a VBAC due to fear of uterine rupture.

  • In uterine rupture, the scar from your previous C-section operation tears.
  • It is life threatening for both you and your baby.
  • If you have a uterine rupture during normal delivery, you will need to have an immediate C – section.
  • The chances of uterine rupture are higher if you are overweight, or if your wounds have not healed properly.

  • The best way to ensure that you have a fast recovery and can conceive normally is to relax and avoid stress.
  • Eat well, have your vitamins, folic acid and iron supplements.
  • Do not put any physical strain on your body, and get household help if needed.
  • Lastly, it is a must to consult your doctor before trying to conceive again.

Follow the medical instructions to have a healthy and happy pregnancy.
