The recommended daily amount is 85 mg for pregnant women. (v) This dosage comes from an array of fruits and vegetables that can be consumed fresh. Vitamin C supplement during pregnancy is not usually required and when consumed in excess can cause the following complications:

  • Over dosage of Vit C can raise the risk of preterm birth.
  • Pregnant mothers have given birth to babies with scurvy in rare cases due to too much vitamin C during pregnancy
  • Sometimes vitamin C can cause gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhoea during pregnancy. In such cases, the supplement should be stopped immediately and the doctor consulted.
  • It can also lead to developing kidney stones.
  • If the person is prone to gout, the supplements can aggravate the situation.
