Caffeine In Chocolate:

It may come as a surprise to you, but one of the main ingredients in chocolate is caffeine. It is imperative you rule out chocolates that are high in caffeine. Caffeine has a direct impact on your child’s health, and it usually transfers to your breast milk.

One of the common complaints most lactating moms have is that eating too much chocolate increases gassiness in their babies. As your little one’s digestive system is still developing, strong flavors like caffeine are a certain no-no.

Theobromine In Chocolate:

Another ingredient that chocolate contains is theobromine. As a lactating mom, you need to avoid theobromine as much as you can. It has little positive effect on your body and can trigger allergies in your baby. If you consume chocolates high in theobromine, your baby will typically develop gas problems after feeds.

If you can’t resist chocolate, the best thing to do is switch to white chocolates. White chocolates have lower theobromine content than darker varieties and are thus less harmful to your little darling. However, don’t go the whole hog, eat white chocolate but don’t gorge on an entire bar all at once.

Side Effects Of Eating Chocolate While Breastfeeding:

So, how do you find out whether your baby likes chocolates or not? Put another way, how do you check whether the chocolate has any effects on your baby? Well, the symptoms will not always be apparent. However, some common symptoms include:

  1. Nausea
  2. Vomiting
  3. Hyperactivity
  4. Diarrhea
  5. Rashes
  6. Insomnia
  7. Restlessness

If you notice any of the above symptoms post breastfeeding your baby, then it’s time for you to take action. Giving up chocolate does sound like an awful choice to make, but that’s what you’ll have to do. At least until you are nursing. If the symptoms persist, take your little angel to the pediatrician.

In some cases, the newborns, just like their mothers, love chocolates. In other words, your eating chocolate during breastfeeding does not seem to affect your little one at all. However, even if you are one of the lucky few, set a safe limit for chocolate consumption.
