Menstrual cycle in a woman’s life hold a special place, as its timely appearance signifies that her hormones are balanced and the reproductive system is functioning properly.

Understandably, when period doesn’t appear on time it becomes a cause of concern for many women. A missed period can be linked to several concerning factors-it may be a sign of hormonal imbalance, or it may also mean that you have been under a lot of stress lately. Some dietary changes, medications or weight fluctuations may also affect the menstrual cycle. Menopause or menarche can also be the cause of irregular periods. Sometimes, a simple mistake in the calculation of the date can cause you to think that your period is missed or delayed.

A missed period may also mean that you are pregnant! For those who

are planning to conceive or even those who don’t want to conceive; the sign of a missed period can be equally anxious. These women would be eager to know the reason behind the missed period and whether it’s time to book an appointment with the gynaecologist.

1. Tender Breasts and Tender/Sore Nipples:

Unusually tender breasts and nipples signify that the stork may be visiting you soon. Some women find their nipples protruding more than usual during pregnancy. Their areolas too, appear darker and spotted. The tenderness of the breast during pregnancy occurs mainly due to changes in the levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is one of the most obvious and noticeable early signs of pregnancy after missed period.

2. Nausea and Other Digestive Problems:

Nausea is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy. An estimated 80% of women experience nausea or morning sickness during their first trimester! Don’t worry though- the feeling of nausea stops in the second trimester for most of the women. If you feel nausea or an urge to puke at the most unexpected time, you may want to investigate it further.

These uncomfortable feelings during pregnancy usually occur as a result of the changes in hormones and abdominal structure. An increased sense of smell escalates the feeling of nausea. Expectant mothers also experience digestive issues like constipation or gas in the initial stages, and for some others, these issues continue throughout pregnancy.

3. Bloating:

Experience bloating, even with your regular water intake, can be a sign of pregnancy. Suddenly you feel your clothes are getting tighter in early pregnancy stages itself! Bloating is believed to occur due to the increased levels of the hormone progesterone. Some women even experience mild cramps and backache. Though all of these symptoms can occur in pre menstruation too, they usually point out to a successful pregnancy.

4. Mood Swings and Irritability:

Mood swings is one of the common signs of pregnancy after missed period due to the hormonal changes. If you find yourself getting emotional at the drop of the hat, then it may be a sign that you’re pregnant. Thankfully, you’re not alone- a lot of women experience mood swings during pregnancy. Once again we have our old friends- the hormones estrogen and progesterone to blame! Other factors like fatigue and metabolism changes may heighten the mood swings.
