It may be one of the earliest indications that you are pregnant! And then again, you may not experience it, but still be pregnant.
Most women feel nausea and vomiting sensation during the early days of pregnancy. While some experience this for the first trimester or so, others may have it till the last month too!
Unlike what it is popularly known as, morning sickness is not actually restricted only in the morning. In fact, many women experience a feeling of nausea and vomiting throughout the evening and night.
Although this is a normal condition during pregnancy, you may feel disturbed by frequent bouts of vomiting. You may also worry that whatever you eat is coming out, and your baby is not getting the adequate amount of nutrition.
Vomiting a few times a day is normal, but if the number increases alarmingly, or if you vomit anything more than three to four times on a daily basis, you should definitely ask your doctor to take a look.

Vomiting During Pregnancy:
During pregnancy, you and your body undergo many changes, both physically and mentally. Your body is going through a massive change in hormonal levels. These changes and fluctuations cause changes in muscle contraction and relaxation patterns of your stomach and intestines. This in turn could result in nausea and vomiting.
Here are some theories that have been put forth by medical experts to explain the reason behind why women vomit during pregnancy:
Pregnancy hormones like human chorionic gonadotrophin(hcg), estrogen and progesterone are the biggest reason why you feel a vomiting tendency during pregnancy. Abnormal levels of thyroid hormones may also result in severe vomiting. Also, low blood sugar levels may trigger nausea or vomiting.
You may experience nausea or vomiting when you eat certain food items or even smell some of them. The smell of seafood, meats, garlic, eggs, tea, or even a cup of coffee can trigger vomiting.
3. Spicy And Fatty Foods:
Pregnancy tends to slow down your digestion. Indigestion can lead to severe acidity, thereby triggering vomiting.
4. Multiple Babies:
If you are carrying multiple babies, it means that you have higher levels of pregnancy hormones in your body. This will cause you to vomit much more than others.
5. Psychological Factors:
It is a popular notion that when you are anxious or dealing with any negative thoughts, it can aggravate vomiting.
Knowing Your Medical Condition:
While not all vomiting conditions experienced during pregnancy are serious, you need to be absolutely sure that the nausea or vomiting you are experiencing is an effect of pregnancy and not something else.
Sometimes, the vomiting and nausea can be extremely severe.
In medical terms, Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is the term used to describe a condition or a pregnancy complication that is characterized by excessive nausea, vomiting and dehydration. It is known to affect 0.5 to 2% of pregnant women. Hyperemesis gravidarum occurs generally in the first trimester of pregnancy and can go along for as long as one delivers the baby.
Severe Hyperemesis Gravidarum can result in:
- Loss of as much as 10% of body weight
- Dehydration that may result in ketosis and constipation
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Metabolic imbalances
- Pregnancy stress, both physical and emotional.

How Can You Prevent Nausea, Vomiting and Morning Sickness?
While vomiting is a part of a healthy pregnancy, there are certain ways that lets yoy know how to avoid vomiting during pregnancy and keep the urge in check:
1. Do Not Keep Your Stomach Empty After Waking Up:
Eat something in the morning as soon as you wake up. It is not advisable to keep your stomach empty for too long as it could aggravate acidity and induce vomiting.
2. Drinking Fluids:
One of the key precautions that you should take care throughout your pregnancy is to stay hydrated at all times.
- Avoid drinking fluids during, just before, or immediately after your meal.
- Vomiting can certainly pull you down leaving you feeling dehydrated and tired. Hence
- supplementing this water loss is a must, either through water or fluids like juices, lemonade, etc.Drink at least 8 glasses of water.
