Upto 70 percent of expecting mothers experience nausea symptoms at some point of time during their pregnancy, most commonly during the first trimester. Contrary to the popular belief, nausea does not pose any health risk to the baby.

What Is Acupressure?

Acupressure is a treatment therapy which originates from China This therapy works by application of pressure on different areas of the body which is believed to stimulate different organs and help restore health.

Acupressure for pregnancy nausea has been used by many women. In addition, this therapy is also believed to be helpful in dealing with several health conditions including menstrual problems, bedwetting, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome etc. (2)

Benefits Of Acupressure For Nausea In Pregnancy:

While acupressure has been found to have many health benefits associated with its applications, it hardly shows effectiveness in reducing nausea symptoms during pregnancy.

It is believed that acupressure point PC 6, which is located in the groove between the tendons on the inside of the wrist could be effective against pregnancy related nausea and vomiting. Specialized wrist bands are also available at pharmacy stores which stimulate the pressure point. (3)

However, a systematic review which took into consideration 27 previous trials including a total of 4041 pregnant women, has revealed that acupressure had little or no effects in reducing nausea associated with pregnancy. It is believed that the benefits of acupressure, when it comes to treating nausea are not long lasting and are inconsistent. (4)

Another study claims that acupressure and acupuncture, when used as a treatment for nausea during pregnancy, do not work any better than placebo. (5)

Another study found that ginger could turn out to be a much better remedy for mild to moderate pregnancy nausea as opposed to acupressure. (6)

Risks Of Acupressure For Pregnancy Nausea:

The use of acupressure during pregnancy could actually have a few health risks associated with it.

  • Acupressure must be strictly avoided during the third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Acupressure must also never be performed alone during pregnancy, as stimulation of the wrong points could prove to be dangerous.
  • It is advisable to try acupressure only when the baby is past the due date, since stimulation of certain points may trigger uterine contractions and start labor. (7)
  • Acupressure is best performed with the help of a professional, and should be considered only after the consent of a medical practitioner.
