A woman goes through way many changes during pregnancy, than one can fully document. If only someone could hand over a “how your body changes day by day during pregnancy” manual, life would have been easier, right? But that can possibly never happen because no pregnancy is the same.

Forget two different individuals; even the same woman is likely to have two separate experiences in two different pregnancies! However, there are a few common problems that most pregnant women face, and indigestion is one of them.

Pregnancy and Indigestion:

Since indigestion makes one feel really uncomfortable around the abdomen area, some may mistake and panic that something has happened to their baby. Nearly 8 out of 10 pregnant women experience indigestion at some point. Be assured that if it is indeed indigestion, it is quite common during pregnancy normal and by itself, it will not harm you or

your unborn baby.

What Causes Indigestion During Pregnancy?

Indigestion, in medical terms, is called dyspepsia. This condition, during, pregnancy mainly occurs due to hormonal changes. It is believed that hormones during pregnancy relax your body muscles and in the process slow down the functioning of your body. As a result, your digestive system also slows down and hence causing indigestion leaving you with a bloated feeling, heart burning sensation, nausea or vomiting.

Symptoms Of Indigestion in Pregnancy:

Since hormones are the culprit, the chances of experiencing a pregnancy without experiencing indigestion at all, is nearly zero. Some of the common symptoms of indigestion include:

  • Heartburn or a burning sensation
  • Feeling of fullness
  • Constant burping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Regurgitation or food coming up from the stomach
  • Bloating

Preventive Measures:

Facing this condition during pregnancy is inevitable, but the good news is that we have a number of preventive measures for your try and relieve your indigestion:

1. Avoid Trigger Foods:

Foods such as highly seasoned spicy stuff, alcohol, caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea and cola, chocolate etc. should be avoided. Stay away from greasy and oily food as far as possible as it is most likely to lead to indigestion. Believe it or not, even fruit juice can be an indigestion trigger!

2. Drink Enough Water:

Drinking water is most certainly good, but before and after your meals and not with your meals. Excess fluids mixed with food will bloat your stomach and aggravate heartburn and indigestion during pregnancy.

3. Opt For Smaller Meals:

Instead of having three large meals, have six smaller meals at regular intervals of the day. Smaller meals help better digestion of food and hence preventing indigestion. Avoid eating a heavy meal before going to sleep as it may trigger indigestion.

4. Stock Up On Antacids:

Always keep antacids stacked in your first aid box. Antacids are a type of medicine that provides instant relief from indigestion. These neutralize the acids in your stomach, making it less acidic so that they do not irritate the lining of the digestive system.

5. Pay Heed To Positions:

Do not eat lying down as it is likely to lead to indigestion. Before going to bed, use pillows to prop up your head and shoulders. The slope can prevent stomach acids from moving up into your esophagus while you are asleep. Do not bend over as too much pressure on your stomach can lead to eating food coming up from the stomach.

Indigestion during pregnancy is normal, but it should be within limits. Too much of indigestion can leave you irritated and feeling sick all the time. If that’s the case, please consult your doctor immediately and ask her to prescribe some emergency medication if indigestion in pregnancy aggravates.
