Spice, whether in life or in food, adds a zing! All cuisine has a reasonable amount of spice in them. Spice in food provides you with minerals, and vitamins. Many of them are over- the- shelf guards of good health and well-being.

There is a strong valve at the base of the esophagus that keeps down the acid your stomach produces. Spicy foods increase the acid amount, because then your stomach needs to work harder to digest them.

Is It Safe To Eat Spicy Food During Pregnancy?

First, the Good news – craving for spicy food is common among moms-to-be, and what’s more, spice is not bad for you or your unborn baby.

The flip side of eating spicy food during pregnancy is, you will have a lot more discomfort than before if you have spicy food regularly. Causes are as follows:

1. Hormonal Changes:

Apart from many other effects, hormones affect your sto

mach muscles too. It slows down muscles that push food from food pipe to stomach and also the muscles that aid in digesting food.

2. Acid Reflux:

Acid reflux is the pushing up of food from the stomach to the food pipe causing a fiery sensation.

  • When you become pregnant, a hormone called progesterone relaxes all muscles and vessels in your body.
  • The hormone relaxes the valve at the base of your esophagus (the food pipe) so much that when there is more gastric acid in your stomach, the acids creep up into your food pipe easily. Spicy food will worsen this acid reflux.
  • Furthermore, as your pregnancy progresses, your baby and your tummy grows. The pressure put on the stomach forces the acids, which have nowhere to go but up. This causes heartburn.

3. Heartburn:

Heartburn normally occurs from the 4th month. Heartburn is characterized by burning sensation that begins from the bottom part of the breastbone and extends up to the lower part of the throat region.There are several other factors that can cause heartburn during pregnancy.

  • Raw/cooked onions and garlic have pungent odor which when consumed does not leave a good taste.
  • Oily and greasy foods are easily pushed up the food pipe.
  • Consumption of beverages containing caffeine.
  • Medications that cause acidity.
  • Gobbling food can result in belches or hiccups. This causes food to be pushed up causing further discomfort.

4. Nausea Or Morning Sickness:

Spicy foods can aggravate morning sickness. The mere smell of a spicy seasoning on food causes nausea and morning sickness during pregnancy. Nausea doubled with heart burn causes a lot of discomfort.

Possible Alternatives To Spicy Foods During Pregnancy:

Not all food and cuisine are spicy. Few foods are more known for their spice and tangy flavorings. A wise option is to have moderate spice and avoid heartburn sensations.

  • The best option is to eat home cooked meals, where you can regulate the amount and quality of spices used to prepare your food.
  • Limit your spicy dish to just one per meal. If the spice in Indian cuisine gives you heartburn, perhaps you can try other cuisines.
  • Thai and Mexican cuisine have vegetable fillings of hot peppers, jalapeño, chili flakes, oregano, etc. These are milder than the green chilies and red chili powder used in Indian cuisine.
  • You can also choose mild flavored Italian cuisine, which will satiate your palate too.

Like we said, spice is nice if you refrain from having an excess of it. A pinch of spice in food does no harm to anyone. Also, avoiding a large meal will make digestion faster.
