Causes Of Jaundice In Children:

Jaundice is a common occurrence in preterm babies. The liver is still in the developing stage and the bilirubin does not get flushed out of the body regularly. The level usually goes down in two weeks after birth. Jaundice in older children might be caused due to the following reasons:

  • Drinking unhealthy or unclean water.
  • Consuming unhealthy food.
  • Weak liver or any liver infection.
  • Other medical conditions like malaria, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaeimia, gall bladder stones, pancreatic infection, etc.
  • Any other medical condition which results in excessive red blood cells catalysis or damage to the gallbladder. Due to these cases, the bile ducts fail to flush out bilirubin out of the system.

Symptoms Of Jaundice In Children:

The primary symptom of jaundice is the yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Apart from that, the other jaundice symptoms in children are as follows:

  • Your child might be complaining about itchy skin.
  • Your child might experience flu like symptoms such as fever, joint pain, etc.
  • Your child passes pale or yellow colored stool.
  • Dark colored urine.
  • Chills and stomach pain.
  • Sudden dwindling of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

Treatment Of Jaundice In Children:

  • Prevention is always better than cure. Consult your doctor today about the Hepatitis B vaccine. This will safeguard your child from this condition. A newborn will be given phototherapy in case his jaundice does not get cured on its own. If your child suffers from hepatitis A and E, then he will recover on his own. The common treatment of jaundice comprises of the following steps:
  • Your child’s doctor will examine him physically for symptoms like swelling of legs, feet, ankle and the liver to check for liver cirrhosis.
  • He may also prescribe a number of blood tests, a liver function test and liver biopsy to understand the exact stage.
  • In order to check the condition of the bile duct and liver, the doctors might suggest CT scans, MRI, X-rays and ultrasound tests.
  • The treatment depends on the severity of the case. Usually, drinking fluids and bed rest cures the condition. However, for serious conditions like sickle cell anaemia that causes jaundice, a blood transfusion might be required.
  • For a severely damaged liver, a liver transplant might also be required.
