When you are pregnant, your body retains fluid and swells. This swelling puts pressure on carpal tunnel and eventually squeezes the median nerve running through it. The median nerve carries sensation to the fingers and plays a role in thumb muscle movements.

While a majority of women do not need surgical intervention to get rid of this syndrome, some others might need it.
